Matt Mackellar riding Sumners Road BMX jumps

Matt Mackellar: Sumners and Family

Matt represents the part of BMX that does not always get a trophy or a signature product. He rides, digs, keeps spots running and brings the next generation through. Seeing him share the Sumners lines with Nate is exactly the sort of BMX story Blue Groove should celebrate. Matt was riding long before Blue Groove existed and has put serious time into keeping the dirt running at Sumners. These days he gets to hit the same lines with his son Nate. That's the good stuff. Progression is easy to judge by the biggest trick, but that is only one part of a rider's story. Showing up, helping with the spot, riding with the crew and keeping the next generation keen matters just as much. BMX scenes survive because people put time into them when there is no trophy, camera or free product involved. That is especially true around local dirt jumps, where a few reliable people can be the difference between something growing and disappearing. We rate the riding, obviously, but we also rate the effort around it. Seeing family, mates and different generations sharing the same session is the part that makes BMX feel like more than another sport.

This one is not really about selling a signature setup. It is about a local rider, a local spot and the work that lets the session happen in the first place. Dirt jumps do not look after themselves. Somebody has to shape them, water them, repair the rough bits and know when they need to be left alone. Matt has put that time in, then gets the reward of riding the same lines with Nate. The FPV footage catches that better than a pile of product photos ever could. You see the speed through the jumps, the way both riders know the line and the simple good bit of a dad and son having a session together. That is exactly the kind of BMX we want in the Bloggery. It is not polished into something it was not, and it does not need a giant claim attached to it. It is just a proper afternoon on bikes with a story worth keeping. Local riding like this rarely gets the same attention as a contest final or a big-brand video, but it is where most BMX actually lives. It is the after-work dig, the quick evening roll and the message asking whether the jumps are running. Matt has kept putting time into that ordinary side of the scene, and the fact Nate now shares it with him makes the whole thing better.
