Travis Hughes riding BMX for Odyssey

Travis Hughes: Odyssey Travis Grips

Travis rides street with power, speed and a loose style that never looks over-rehearsed. Big setups and hard landings are part of the deal, but there is still plenty of finesse in the way he moves the bike. His signature grips came from how he actually catches and controls it. Heavy street riding always looks cleaner once it has been cut into a finished video. What you do not see is the ugly run-up, the rail that is rougher than it looked, the impact through the bike and the number of times a rider has to commit before it finally works. That is why power on its own is not enough. The rider still needs control, timing and the confidence to stay with it when the setup starts fighting back. The best heavy clips feel direct rather than messy. There is no extra carrying on, just speed, commitment and a bike being put exactly where it needs to go. That mix is a big part of the appeal here. That is the bit we wanted to celebrate with Travis Hughes. The riding has a clear point of view and you can recognise it without needing a name slapped across the screen. Plenty of people can copy an individual trick. Copying the way somebody sees a spot, carries speed or puts a line together is a completely different job.

Odyssey Travis Grips. That matters if you are constantly catching bars, moving your hands or generally riding the bike like Travis. Contact points do a quiet amount of work. Grips and gloves affect how the bars feel, how easily the hands move and whether a long session stays comfortable. They are not going to add a new trick, but a shape or texture you actually like can make the bike feel familiar straight away. That is especially true for riders who catch bars, move their hands or spend hours holding on through rough landings. Signature contact gear is best when the rider has made a real choice about feel rather than just picked a graphic. The small details are the whole product here, so comfort still matters more than copying somebody else's colour. At Blue Groove, we would rather talk through what you ride than tell you to copy a pro bike from the tyres up. Use the linked setup as a starting point. If the geometry and feel suit you, great. If not, there is nothing wrong with keeping the bike you already know. Watch: Travis Hughes Signature Grip Hero image: Odyssey BMX video still.
